Chen’s Results Reported by “Math in the Media” of American Mathematical Society

A recent story in “Math in the Media” of American Mathematical Society (AMS) reported the results of Professor Danny Chen and graduate student Jianxu Chen of CSE, co-authored with Dr. Dhagash Mehta (a visiting research assistant professor in the Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics, University of Notre Dame), Dr Halim Kusumaatmaja (Department of Physics, University of Durham, UK), and Professor David J. Wales (Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, UK), in their 2016 Physical Review Letters (PRL) paper titled "Kinetic Transition Networks for the Thomson Problem and Smale's Seventh Problem". In this paper, the authors suggested a new angle for understanding a famous mathematical problem, called Smale's 7th problem, and provided a connection with J.J. Thomson's early model of atomic structure, which they established using an approach based on energy landscapes. The journal of PRL selected this paper as Editors' Suggestion.
