Meet the Outstanding Teacher for 2017: Peter J. Bui

Virginia Watterson • DATE: September 21, 2017

Since Notre Dame added engineering to its curriculum in 1973, faculty in the College of Engineering have continued to nurture the educational aspirations of thousands of students and, through their research, have contributed much to the generation of new knowledge and technologies.

We remain committed to providing an undergraduate education that is rich in technical content, that is relevant to the needs of the 21st century, and that fosters the growth of technical leadership, moral character, and a spirit of service among our students.

As we acknowledge the many faculty members who make this possible, we want to be sure to recognize those special faculty who went above and beyond. This is why the College of Engineering awards the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award annually and why this year the college recognized Assistant Teaching Professor Peter J. Bui.

Bui was named the 2017 Outstanding Teacher of the Year for his enthusiastic teaching style and zeal for the subject matter. Students describe him as a challenging professor who pushes them to read and think critically, and to listen to their peers. Bui inspires his students to be better engineers and better people by creating fun, yet challenging, coursework that is “intellectually rigorous but never impossible.”

A Notre Dame alum, Bui’s research interests encompass distributed and parallel computing, systems programming, web services, and computer science education.
