Title
"Designing Collaborative Healthcare Technology for Acute Care"
Preventable medical errors are a grim subject for the healthcare industry. Each year, preventable medical errors kill as many as 400,000 people in the United States. Errors may occur most commonly due to three factors: lack of situational awareness, context-related challenges, and problems in oversight.
These problems are highly apparent in acute care settings. In acute care, teams of clinicians commonly work together in what are called resuscitation codes. Code situations can be challenging for teams due to their high-reliance on verbal communication, which is susceptible to information loss.
To address the challenges clinicians face in code situations, the proposed work will explore how a collaborative aid, called Visual TASK (Team Awareness and Shared Knowledge), facilitates situational awareness of acute care teams. A multi-site evaluation will focus on the effects of Visual TASK on three key components: situational awareness, workload, and performance.
