"Soft Biometrics, Performance and Presentation Attack Detection in Iris Recognition"

Iris recognition is a mature technology that over the last 20 years has been employed in an extensive range of applications.  In fact, the number of iris recognition deployments is growing, and so is their coverage. Country wide identification programs in which the number of enrollments reach millions are not rare and are becoming more common. New possibilities of application using soft biometrics like gender, age or ethnicity categorization help to bring more attention to the area. However, the increase in popularity and utilization also reveal the need for improvement, or even eventual frailties.

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the improvement of iris recognition systems, in three main aspects: 1) performing and understanding iris based gender prediction as a soft biometric attribute; 2) accuracy and performance issues concerning some search methods used in iris databases; and 3) advancement of presentation attack detection methods in iris recognition. In this sense, this proposal will report the progress and results obtained so far, and describe the intended course of action for the completion of the dissertation.
