Grad Student Ryan McCune Receives IBM Fellowship

Virginia Watterson • DATE: April 2, 2015

Grad student Robert Ryan McCune has been awarded one of the 2015-2016 IBM Ph.D. Fellowships for Cognitive Research. This award is highly competitive worldwide and recognizes students as well as the quality of their home institution.  Ryan’s research explores how groups can solve problems when no single entity in the group has the capacity to perceive the whole problem, with applications to multi-agent systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and graph processing of Big Data.  Similar challenges are faced by Cognitive Systems technology at IBM, where a user interacts with a system composed of several competing components – a Ted Talk video demonstrating one such system can be found here.  Ryan is advised by Dr. Greg Madey.
