Milenkovic to join ISCB Board of Directors in 2020

Professor Milenkovic

The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) is the leading professional society in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics. ISCB aims to advance understanding of living systems through computation and communicate scientific advances worldwide, by providing high-quality meetings, publications, and knowledge dissemination, as well as by actively facilitating training, education, employment, career development, and networking.

The ISCB Board of Directors is responsible for the direction and future of the Society. The Board consists of around 30 volunteer leaders who act and think strategically, setting goals and strategies for the future with input from members, stakeholders, and committees.

One of ISCB's prominent committees is the Communities of Special Interest (COSI) Committee, which is responsible for the development, progression, and overall management of all ISCB COSIs. The COSI Committee is made up of two representatives from each COSI. Each COSI is built around a major research theme within computational biology or important activities such as networks of training, mentoring and/or support. Currently, there exist 20 ISCB COSIs. Some examples are: 3D-SIG: Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Biophysics; Education: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Education and Training; EvolCompGen: Evolution & Comparative Genomics; JPI: Junior Principal Investigators; MLCSB: Machine Learning in Computational and Systems Biology; Microbiome; and NetBio: Network Biology.

Because ISCB perceives the COSIs as an important and integral part of the Society, it has been decided that the COSI Committee is to elect in staggered terms three COSI representatives to serve as Directors on the ISCB Board of Directors. Each representative is to serve a three-year term (one representative starting in 2019, another starting in 2020, and a final one starting in 2021), with the option to be re-elected for a second term. Dr. Tijana Milenkovic has been elected to the ISCB Board of Directors to represent the Society's COSIs starting 2020.

About Dr. Milenkovic: She is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. She has been a Notre Dame faculty since 2010, after earning a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from UC Irvine in the same year. Milenkovic lab solves challenging problems in the fields of network science, graph algorithms, computational biology, scientific wellness, and social networks. Dr. Milenkovic won prestigious 2015 NSF CAREER and 2016 Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program (AFOSR YIP) awards. Also, she has acted as the lead Principal Investigator on five other awards by NSF or NIH and as a co-Investigator on seven additional collaborative awards by NSF, NIH, or Google. She has published 57 journal and conference papers in prominent venues. Dr. Milenkovic has been an Associate Editor of IEEE/ACM TCBB since 2014 and of Nature's Scientific Reports since 2018. She has contributed to the organization of the flagship NetBio COSI meeting since 2017. She has been an active organizer of the Great Lakes Bioinformatics Conference since 2015. Dr. Milenkovic is committed to increasing participation of women and diversity in computer science. For example, she has served as a member of the Notre Dame’s University Committee on Women Faculty and Students. Also, she has organized outreach activities to middle school girls yearly since 2012.
