Profound changes in the workplace over the course of the past few years require us to look at career preparation differently.  The market is a lot more fluid; it has to be.  To succeed, you need to approach your professional development much like an entrepreneur approaches the business plan:

  • Understand and outline your competitive advantage for any job or opportunity
  • Adapt your career plans as you change, the people around you change and as the economy changes
  • Develop a professional network; build strong alliances and maintain a diverse mix of relationships
  • Watch for breakout opportunities/skills that will greatly accelerate your career trajectory
  • Take calculated risks that move you out of your comfort zone allowing for more resilience to economic pressures. Reach into your network for information and intelligence that will help you make smarter decisions
