With advances in automatic speech recognition, spoken dialogue systems are assuming increasingly social roles. There is a growing need for these systems to be socially responsive, capable of building rapport with users. In human-human conversation, rapport has been found to be critical to conflict resolution, learning, and engagement; the presence of rapport promotes successful collaboration, motivation, and task success. Dialogue systems which can build rapport with their user may produce similar effects, personalizing interactions to create better outcomes. This talk will explore how dialogue systems can build rapport utilizing the conversational phenomenon known as acoustic-prosodic entrainment. Acoustic-prosodic entrainment occurs when individuals adapt their acoustic-prosodic features of speech, such as tone of voice or loudness, to one another over the course of a conversation. Correlated with liking and task success, entrainment has the potential to enhance rapport. However, modeling entrainment is exceptionally challenging – people entrain on many different features in many different ways and how to design entrainment to build rapport is unclear. In this talk I will describe the work we have undertaken to understand how acoustic-prosodic entrainment can be modeled to build rapport and how influencing rapport with entrainment may influence other positive outcomes in a human-robot interaction.

Nichola Lubold

Arizona State University

Nichola Lubold is a postdoctoral scholar in the Electrical Engineering Department and the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. She received her Ph.D. in 2018 in Computer Science from Arizona State. Her research encompasses human-computer interaction, natural language processing, and robotics. Broadly, she is interested in the development of personalized, adaptive technologies that are situated in human-human interaction and can create engaging and productive experiences. She received her undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering from Notre Dame in 2008.
