Xiaobo Sharon Hu, professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has received the 2023 Marie R. Pistilli Women in Engineering Achievement Award from the Design Automation Conference (DAC). DAC is the largest industry event devoted to electronic computer-aided design.
DAC’s Executive Committee presents this award annually to an individual who has made significant contributions in helping women advance in the field of electronic design automation (EDA) technology.
The nomination cited Hu’s research contributions to low-power system design, emerging technologies’ circuits and architectures, real-time embedded systems, and hardware-software co-design. Her work employs algorithm and/or hardware design and analysis techniques to solve problems arising from real-world applications. She has published over 450 papers.
The award also recognizes Hu’s dedication to helping women early in their careers. Her mentoring style was described by a colleague in the nomination as “cheerful, methodical, unrushed, and unbending in commitment to scientific rigor, truth and fairness.”
Hu is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Fellow of IEEE and has received three best paper awards to date. She recently was named rotating program director in the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Computing and Communication Foundations.
She joined the Notre Dame faculty in 1996.
