Nitesh Chawla, Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame and director of the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, has been elected as a fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
The AAAS is one of the world’s largest general scientific societies and publisher of the Science family of journals. Election as a fellow of AAAS is a lifetime honor.
Chawla is recognized for distinguished contributions to artificial intelligence and data science, specifically in machine learning from imbalanced data, machine learning on graphs, and data science for societal impact.
“The passion that Nitesh brings to his work and his commitment to leveraging data science for societal good is a source of inspiration,” said Jane Cleland-Huang Frank M. Freimann Professor of Computer Science and chair of Computer Science and Engineering. “This most recent honor is a testament to the innovation and impact of his many contributions.”
Chawla is also a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
The newest class of AAAS Fellows includes five faculty from the University of Notre Dame, representing expertise and accomplishment in biological sciences, chemistry, medical sciences, engineering, neuroscience and physics.
AAAS Fellows have been elected since 1874, and their ranks include scientists, engineers, and innovators as Thomas Edison; W.E.B. Du Bois; Grace Hopper; and Vint Cerf.
