Compute-Less Networking: Enabling the Operation of Next-Generation Applications

The pervasive deployment of next-generation applications, such as Augmented Reality, Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, and smart health, has been rather challenging, since these applications generate massive amounts of data that need to be stored and processed as quickly as possible. In this presentation, I will discuss the design of “compute-less networking”, a paradigm that consists of networking and computing mechanisms, which enable the pervasive deployment of such applications.

Compute-less networking aims to fulfill the requirements of next-generation applications while reducing the usage of network and computing resources and, at the same time, providing security, privacy, and significantly reduced data processing times. Finally, I will present the research insights gained during the inception of compute-less networking and highlight research directions that are worth investigating in the future.

Dr. Spyridon (Spyros) Mastorakis is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2019. His research interests include network systems and architectures, edge computing and IoT, and security. Dr. Mastorakis is a recipient of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Research Initiation Initiative (CRII) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). His research has been supported by NSF and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and has been published at premier technical venues, including the IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM), the IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom), the IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS), the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, and the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics. Dr. Mastorakis currently serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Internet of Things Journal, which is among the highest impact factor technical journals in the broader field of telecommunications.
