Notre Dame engineering professors Nitesh Chawla and Vijay Gupta have been named 2022 Newly Elevated Fellows with the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE Board of Directors elevates members to fellows when they have made extraordinary contributions to IEEE fields.
Chawla, an expert in artificial intelligence, data science and network science, is the Frank Freimann Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and the founding director of Notre Dame’s Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society. He was elevated to fellow status for his contributions to learning from imbalanced data and heterogeneous graphs.
Gupta, professor of electrical engineering, was elevated to IEEE fellow for his contributions to networked and cyber-physical systems. His research interests are in the broad area of distributed decision making. He uses data-driven and model-driven approaches to inform applications related to the emerging “smart” architecture of societal infrastructure, including networks for transportation, power grid and water distribution.
