Thomas Coates receives Slatt Fellowship for energy research

Thomas Coates

Thomas Coates, a sophomore computer science major, has received the Vincent P. Slatt Fellowship for Undergraduate Research in Energy Systems and Processes.

He will conduct energy-related research through the Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame (ND Energy).

Coates’ project, “Probe waveform and nanosecond imaging comparative analysis for volumetric space charge waves,” aims to better understand streamer corona discharge in the control and use of low-temperature plasmas. He is working to develop a measurement protocol using the ISSD ANDOR iStar camera to image and analyze streamer corona discharge. His advisor is Sergey Leonov, research scientist in aerospace and mechanical engineering.

Since 2006, Slatt Fellowships have been made possible through the generosity of Christopher (’80) and Jeanine Slatt in honor of Vincent P. Slatt, Notre Dame Class of 1943.
