Wenhao Yu, a Ph.D. student in computer science and engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named a 2023 Bloomberg Data Science Ph.D. Fellow.
The fellowship provides significant financial and professional support for the year, including a 14-week paid summer internship at Bloomberg in New York.
Yu investigates natural language processing and machine learning. He creates machine learning models that imitate such human behaviors as answering questions, commonsense reasoning and generating language.
“When seeking answers to questions, people often look first for relevant information on the Internet, and then come to the answer by reading the retrieved information,” said Yu. “The primary goal of my research is to create machine learning models that mimic the way people synthesize information in order to solve problems.”
With the support of the Bloomberg Fellowship, Yu plans to continue working on developing an effective knowledge retrieval system and better integrating retrieved knowledge to address real-world problems.
Yu is a member of the Data Mining Toward Decision-Making (DM2 Lab) under the direction of Meng Jiang, assistant professor of computer science and engineering.
